The Tampa Bay Times Forum is the home arena of the Tampa Bay Lightning, who moved in after several seasons at the Expo Hall and Tropicana Field. The arena also hosted the 1999 NHL All-Star Game and in 2012, it will host the NCAA's Frozen Four. In addition to the Lightning, it is currently the home arena of the Tampa Breeze of the Lingerie Football League and the Tampa Bay Storm of the Arena Football League. It was ranked the 4th busiest arena in the United States in 2010.

BankAtlantic Center is the home arena of the Florida Panthers in suburban Fort Lauderdale, as well as the home of the annual Orange Bowl Basketball Classic. It is currently the largest arena in Florida and second-largest in the southeastern United States, behind the Greensboro Coliseum. It hosted the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, as well as the 2003 NHL All-Star Game, when the first official NHL "shootout" occurred. It was also home to the Florida Pit Bulls of the American Basketball Association, the Florida Bobcats of the Arena Football League, the Florida ThunderCats of the National Professional Soccer League and the Miami Caliente of the Lingerie Football League.

Florence Cathedral is officially known as the Basilica of Saint Mary of the Flower and commonly known as the "Duomo" of Florence. It was consecrated in 1436 and the three main structures of the cathedral are UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the city's historic square. The church is one of the largest in Italy and its dome was once the largest in the world. It is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Florence. The site has been home to a cathedral since the 5th century.

The Vancouver native is one of Canada's top two disability icons (along with Terry Fox) and is known for his cross-Canada journey in a wheelchair to raise funds for the cause, as well as his accomplishments as a Paralympic athlete. During the 2010 Winter Olympics, he was one of the torchbearers in the opening ceremony held at the building next to the statue, BC Place.

Piazza San Marco, also known as St. Mark's Square, is the main public square of Venice. Along with the neighboring Piazzetta, this area forms the social, religious and political center of the city. It is also adjacent to St. Mark's Basilica, the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Venice that was consecrated in 1071. The plaza itself was established at around 800; it played a role in European history when Napoleon conquered Venice and seized its horse and lion decorations, sending them to France in 1797, where they remained until 1814, when Venice was occupied by Austria and its chancellor Prince Metternich ordered them returned. The square also occasionally floods due to the "acqua alta" (high waters) that affect Venice from time to time.

The Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre was originally built in 1887 and was home to the terminus station of the Canadian Pacific Railway, which stretched from Vancouver to Eastern Canada. Canada's first-ever transcontinental rail journey arrived at the Roundhouse via Engine 374 in May 1887. The building was expanded several times until 1950, after which it became obsolete. It was in danger of demolition but was saved and was a pavilion during the 1986 World's Fair. In 1993, it was decided that the building would house a community center, which it remains to this day.

Canadian Pacific 374, colloquially known as Engine 374, is the first transcontinental train to cross Canada, arriving in Vancouver on May 23, 1887. It marked the completion of one of the most ambitious engineering projects of the century, after ten years of construction from coast to coast. The train was retired in July 1945 but was neglected until 1983 when it was saved and restored in time to serve as a key attraction to the 1986 World's Fair in Vancouver. In the 1990s, it found a permanent home in the Yaletown Roundhouse Community Centre, which is the site of the former roundhouse building of the transcontinental railway line on which Engine 374 first made history.

Being next to the border with mainland China, it is possible to directly leave the station platform and clear customs, and connect directly to a corresponding rapid transit line across the border. However, this station is in the border area closed to most civilians; the only way to enter the area outside the stations would be to be a resident of Lo Wu or be en route to crossing the border into China.

The older bridge (in the background of the first photo) opened in 1964 and is the longest arch bridge in Canada and 15th longest arch bridge in the world. The newer bridge, still under construction at photo time and scheduled to open in 2012, will be the second longest cable-stayed bridge in the western hemisphere at 470 meters (1542 feet). It will also be the widest long span bridge in the world at 65 meters (213 feet) wide, beating out the previous record holder, the Sydney Harbour bridge.

Maillardville is a neighborhood in Coquitlam, British Columbia known for having the largest French Canadian community west of Manitoba. First established in 1889 and organized in 1910, its roots originate from a lumber community called Fraser Mills; the mill manager's residence is now Place des Arts (bottom photo). When French Canadian influence set in, the area was then named after an Oblate from France named Edmond Maillard. Now a suburban residential neighborhood, Maillardville currently hosts the annual Festival du Bois, the largest French Canadian festival in Western Canada, and shows signs of its roots with its bilingual English-French street signs and high concentration of French language schools and clubs.

The Stockholm Palace is the official residence of the Swedish monarch and is next to the current day Swedish parliament. It is mainly used by the Swedish monarch while performing duties as head of state. Construction of the palace started in 1697 and was completed in 1760; however, the site itself has long been used, with its origins in the 13th century as a fortress to defend Lake Mälaren before being gradually transformed into a palace. That palace was destroyed in a fire in 1697, prompting the construction of the present day structure. With 1430 rooms, it is one of the largest palaces in the world still serving its original purpose.

Tivoli Gardens opened in 1843 and is the second oldest amusement park in the world. With 4.5 million visitors annually, it is the most popular seasonal theme park in the world, the most visited theme park in Scandinavia and fourth most visited theme park in Europe. It was built to distract the population from political situations at the time; the monarch approved the development of 61,000 square meters (15 acres) of land for this purpose. The theme park served as the inspiration for Disneyland Park in Anaheim. The park is home to Rutsjebanen, one of the oldest wooden roller coasters in the world still in operation, as well as Himmelskibet, the world's largest carousel. While not part of the complex's theme park facilities, Europe's longest saltwater aquarium is located here, in the Tivoli Concert Hall.

The Hartwall Areena opened in 1997 and is the home arena for Jokerit Helsinki of the Finnish Elite League (SM-liiga). It was built for the 1997 World Hockey Championships and also hosted the 2003 NHL Challenge, the 2010 NHL Premiere and the 2011 NHL Premiere (in which the Anaheim Ducks played). It also hosted an exhibition inter-league game between the Ducks and Jokerit before the start of the 2011 NHL Premiere.

It was built for the 1986 World's Fair in Vancouver to showcase future technology and architecture. After the Fair, it shut down; it has been anchored in the Burrard Inlet since 1991. Recently, discussions have been underway to finally relocate the barge to Mission, British Columbia and develop it as a restaurant again.

Chichen Itza is a pre-Columbian archeological site from the Mayan civilization and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was built around 600 AD and first discovered around 1910 during a river dredging. The site became a major regional capital for the Mayans, both politically and economically. Some notable structures on the site include the main temple called "El Castillo" (first photo), the Great Ball Court where losing teams of a ball game would be decapitated (second photo) and the Tzompantli skull wall (third photo). The site finally declined around 1000 AD. The Spanish arrived around the 1500s and conquered the land, overcoming strong local Mayan resistance to do so.

Woodwards District is an educational, residential and commercial building located in the Downtown Eastside neighborhood of Vancouver. The site was first established in 1903 as the Woodward's Building to serve as the second ever location of Woodward's, a large department store chain. It once housed the largest supermarket in North America and was the key catalyst to the growth of its surrounding commercial district. As suburban and other urban shopping areas grew, the area around Woodward's declined socially and economically until it gained a reputation as "the poorest postal code in Canada." Woodward's went bankrupt in 1993 and shut down the location, and the building was demolished in 2005. In its place, the current Woodwards District was built and completed in late 2010; it now houses a Simon Fraser University campus location, stores, social housing and market housing. It also features public art, including a glass mural depicting the 1971 Gastown Riots which occurred in nearby Gastown.

The Roger Neilson statue is located outside Rogers Arena to honor former coach Roger Neilson, who is credited with initiating the tradition of rally towels in the National Hockey League (an idea originally from the National Football League). The tradition, dubbed "Towel Power," started in the NHL in an event involving Neilson's Vancouver Canucks and the Chicago Blackhawks in the 1982 Stanley Cup playoffs, where he felt that the officiating was unfairly lopsided. Placing a towel on a stick as a sign of surrender (depicted by the statue), he unknowingly started a tradition that will endure for decades. Neilson died in 2003 from cancer, but not before forming a legacy as one of the most influential coaches in NHL history.

Space Shuttle Enterprise is among the first orbiters ever built, and is on display at the Smithsonian Institution's Air and Space Museum Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia. Enterprise flew a series of space shuttle approaches and landing tests between February 15, 1977 and October 26, 1977 to prove the craft could fly in the atmosphere and land without power-gliding flight. NASA initially intended for Enterprise to join the shuttle fleet; costs of retrofitting it for space flight made it impractical and Challenger was completed instead. Enterprise will remain in the Smithsonian until it is replaced by Discovery and relocated to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York.

The John Hancock Center is a 100-story tower that was the tallest building in the world outside New York City when it was opened in 1968; currently it is the sixth-tallest building in the United States. It houses the world's highest swimming pool and will soon house the world's highest skating rink. The building overlooks Chicago, the third-largest city in the United States and largest city in Illinois. The John Hancock Center is far from the tallest building in the city; the country's tallest building, the Willis Tower, is also located in Chicago.

Berlin Hauptbahnhof, or the Berlin Central Station, is the main station of Germany's capital city, the largest two-level railroad station in Europe and the largest crossing station in Europe. It sits on the grounds of the former Lehrter Bahnhof, a historic railroad station that was heavily damaged during the Second World War and eventually demolished during the Cold War as an indirect result of West Berlin being surrounded by East Berlin; the current building opened in 2006.

Brandenburg Gate is a former city gate in Berlin completed in 1791; it once led to the city palace and was heavily damaged in the Second World War before being jointly restored by West Germany and East Germany. It remained a thoroughfare until the Berlin Wall went up, resulting in the gate ending up on the East Berlin side. At the end of the Cold War, President Ronald Reagan made his infamous plea to "tear down this wall" at the gate. During the fall of the Berlin Wall, celebrations were centered around the gate and made it a symbol of German reunification.

Fort Smith National Historic Site contains the remnants of two 19th-century military forts; one of them was occupied by the United States District Court for the Western District of Arkansas. The site was also a stop on the Trail of Tears. It serves mainly as a museum detailing its military history. US District Judge Isaac Parker served here, and became notable for sentencing 160 people to die (earning him the nickname "The Hanging Judge"); his courthouse has the distinction of having the most men put to death by the government in American history.

Hatley Castle is a National Historic Site located on the campus of Royal Roads University that was the home of former British Columbia Lieutenant Governor, James Dunsmuir. It was also planned as the royal residence for King George VI and his family during the Second World War before such relocation plans were canceled. It was subsequently converted to a naval training facility for Royal Roads, which was then a military college. Today, it is known as the exterior filming location in the X-Men movies (as Professor X's school for mutants) and the Smallville television series (as the Luthor Mansion).

Harbour Centre is one of the tallest buildings in Vancouver and contains a 360-degree viewing deck and a revolving restaurant. It was the tallest building in British Columbia until 2001. It is also home to a major campus of Simon Fraser University, the Italian consulate and the Coast Guard's radio operations. Its viewing deck was officially opened by American astronaut Neil Armstrong, whose footprint was encased in cement for the occasion and is still on display.

It is one of the last surviving ones of its kind remaining in the country.
