Granville Island was originally called Industrial Island and was an industrial manufacturing area. It was mainly known for its sawmills until it declined around the 1970s. At that point, the pollution around the creek was cleaned up and Granville Island was developed into a tourist attraction and arts and theater district, which is what it still is today.
