Seoul is the capital city of South Korea, and the largest city on the Korean Peninsula. Its population is over 10 million, making it one of the most populous cities in the world. Nearly a quarter of the country's population lives in Seoul, and was first settled in around 18 BCE. It has played host to the 1988 Summer Olympics and the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Mostly destroyed during the Korean War, the city has recovered to become one of the world's economic hubs, being home to multinational corporations such as Hyundai-Kia, Samsung and LG.
