Venice is the capital of the Veneto region of Italy and known for its architecture, artworks and lagoon setting. It occupies 117 islands and was historically significant and powerful, both politically and economically, during the Renaissance, Middle Ages and Crusades. It was the head of the Republic of Venice from 697 to 1797, when it was conquered by Napoleon. Today, it is a tourist hub in Europe and also Europe's largest car-free area, instead using pathways and waterways for navigation.
