The National Centre for the Performing Arts is an opera building in Beijing located immediately west of Tiananmen Square and the Great Hall of the People. Inside, it is divided into three major performance halls. It cost a total of 3.2 billion RMB to build, and this has caused some problems in its operations, particularly with operational costs and ticket prices.

Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station opened on July 1, 2010. It opened in conjunction with the Huning Intercity Line. It serves one third of rail traffic between Shanghai and Nanjing. The railway station is also linked to Shanghai's Hongqiao airport, which is the domestic airport for the city. In addition, Shanghai Hongqiao is going to be the terminus of the Beijing-Shanghai and Hunangzhou-Shanghai high speed lines, both of which are currently still under construction.

The People's Square is a large square adjacent to Nanjing Road in the Huangpu District of Shanghai. The People's Square is home to Shanghai's municipal government, museums, and other cultural landmarks. It was formerly a horse race track but with the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, horse racing and gambling were prohibited, and the People's Square was established.

The Shanghai Metro is the urban rapid transit system for Shanghai, China's largest city. It opened in 1995. It was China's third city with a subway system, only after Beijing and Tianjin. The system now has 12 lines with 268 stations. It is currently the longest subway network in the world. It was expanded due to the 2010 World Expo. It is planned to have a total of 22 lines by 2020.

Officially known as the Pudong New Area or Pudong, is an area east of the Huangpu River. It is called Pudong because dong in Mandarin Chinese means east. Since 1990, Pudong has become the New Open and Economic Zone and emerged as the financial and commercial center of China. The Pudong skyline is home to several iconic buildings. These are the Oriental Pearl Tower, Jin Mao Building, and the Shanghai World Financial Center. In 2015, the Shanghai Tower will be added to the Pudong skyline.

Beijing Capital International Airport is the main international airport of Beijing and a central transportation hub for the People's Republic of China. It is the busiest airport in Asia and third busiest in the world. In 2008, it opened Terminal 3, which is currently the world's second largest airport terminal and the world's third largest building by area (formerly the largest).

Tiananmen Square is the largest public square in the world. It is located near the geographical center of Beijing and is the site of many historical movements. It is located immediately south of the Forbidden City. Built in 1651, it was enlarged to its current size in 1958. During the Boxer Rebellion, this is where foreign troops assembled their troops. In 1919, it was the site of the May Fourth Movement; it was also the site of the Tiananmen Square protests of 1979. It is also in front of this square that Mao Zedong announced the founding of the People's Republic of China following the Chinese Civil War. However, its most well-known event is the infamous Tiananmen Square Massacre of 1989, when the government ordered the brutal killings of students pushing for democracy. A few meters from the square is the site of the world famous "Tank Man" photograph.

The Great Hall of the People is located between Tiananmen Square and the National Centre for the Performing Arts. It is used mostly for government meetings and ceremonies by the People's Republic of China and the Communist Party of China, and is essentially their parliament building. Each province, autonomous region and special administrative region in the country has its own hall within the structure. The National People's Congress meets here as well.

The Beijing National Aquatics Center, known commonly as the "Water Cube," was the site of the swimming events for the 2008 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. It is located in the Olympic Park and was the home of 25 new world records in swimming.

The Beijing Subway is the oldest and busiest subway system in Mainland China (and 6th busiest in the world) and second longest (after the Shanghai Metro). It was first proposed in 1953 and was built with help from the Soviet Union and East Germany. It started operations in 1969 and, like the Soviet Union, was built with both civilian and military uses in mind. After the Sino-Soviet split, Soviet experts withdrew from the project in the 1960s and the subway's development was halted almost completely due to other economic difficulties from the Great Leap Forward. In the next few decades, the system was plagued by (occasionally fatal) disasters from both natural and synthetic sources. However, in the 1990s, the system began to expand; in the years leading up to the 2008 Summer Olympics, it grew greatly in size as several lines were added. It currently has 9 lines and is planned to expand to 19 lines by 2015.

The border between the People's Republic of China and the Russian Federation runs for about 4200 kilometers (2600 miles) and its current form was finalized in the Sino-Soviet Border Agreement of 1991. It was agreed upon shortly after the fall of the Soviet Union; thus most of the agreement was inherited by Russia. These photos were taken on the China side of the Amur River (the ninth longest river in the world), with the Jewish Autonomous Oblast in the background; the oblast was created by Soviet leader Joseph Stalin during his nationalism campaign in which he promised to give the Jewish population of the country their own land.
