Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport is the main international airport serving the Taipei area. It was formerly known as Chiang Kai-shek International Airport, named after the former leader of the Republic of China (which ruled the entire China at one point and currently rules the present day Taiwan) as it retreated to the island of Taiwan during the Chinese Civil War.
