Myeondong Cathedral was built in the 1890s is officially known as the Cathedral Church of the Virgin Mary of the Immaculate Conception in Myeongdong and is the official cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Seoul. It is one of the earliest Catholic structures in Korea. In additional to religious activities, it was also been home to political protests during the 1980s and 1990s.
