Myeongdong is an upscale shopping and tourist area in Seoul. It originated as a residential area but changed into a commercial area during the Japanese occupation and adopted its current name after the occupation ended. It is one of the most expensive shopping areas in the world. It is also home to Myeongdong Cathedral, and a focal area for political protests during South Korea's transition to democracy.
