Qumran is an archeological site in the West Bank, near the Dead Sea. It was constructed around 134 to 104 BCE, and destroyed by the Romans around 68. It is notable as the settlement nearest to the caves in which the Dead Sea Scrolls were hidden; they were discovered between 1947 and 1956, though the site had been explored since the 1850s; nearly 900 scrolls were discovered at Qumran.
