Saint Peter's Basilica in the Vatican City has the largest interior of any Christian church in the world and is seen as one of the holiest Catholic sites, despite not being the official mother church of the Roman Catholic Church. Groundbreaking took place in 1506 and it was completed in 1626, making it the most prominent building in Vatican City. It is said that the church was built on top of where Saint Peter was buried.
