The Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Dome is part of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park located about 150 meters (500 feet) from the epicenter of the atomic bomb attack in 1945 during the Second World War. While most buildings around were destroyed, the dome managed to retain its distinctive shape and survived the demolition and reconstruction of the city after the attack. It is currently an UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was built in 1915 and was once an exhibition and industrial promotion hall. It is next to the intended target of the atomic bomb attack, the T-shaped Aioi Bridge, and the bomb exploded nearly right above the dome. It was originally scheduled to be demolished but after debate, it was kept permanently as a memorial to the victims of the attack.

Location formerly known as:
  • Hiroshima Prefectural Commercial Exhibition (1915-1921)
  • Hiroshima Prefectural Products Exhibition Hall (1921-1933)
  • Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall (1933-1945)
