Topkapi Palace were the primary Istanbul home of the Ottoman Sultans between 1465 and 1856. It was the location of royal events and is home to well-known Muslim relics. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985, it was largely unused by 1856 when most functions were moved out of the complex and was turned into a museum in 1924.

The Sultan Ahmed Mosque, also known as the Blue Mosque, was completed in 1616 as an imperial mosque on the site of the palace of the Byzantine emperors. It was intended to be the first mosque of Sultan Ahmed I's empire and is depicted in Turkey's 500-lira banknotes from 1953 to 1976. The inside of the mosque features over 20,000 handmade ceramic tiles.
