The 518 Memorial Park is a public park built to memorialize the victims of the 1980 Gwangju Democratization Movement during South Korea's period under military rule. It is home to a 518 Memorial Culture Hall, a building that commemorates the uprisings and the host venue of the 2008 Gwangju International Peace Forum.

The former Jeollanam provincial building served as the capital building for Jeollanam province until the capital moved from Gwangju to Muan. It is slated for demolition and is most famous for being the place where the Gwangju Democratization Movement escalated into violence during South Korea's military rule; a large part of the violence occurred here, more than the other sites involved in the event. The building and the area around it is being re-developed as the Asian Culture Complex.

Gwangju Station is the KTX station for Gwangju Metropolitan City and is one of the southern termini of the Honam Line.

Chonnam National University is named after Jeollanam province (formerly transliterated as Chollanam), which Gwangju used to be a part of. It is best known as being the starting site of the Gwangju Democratization Movement of 1980, which is a large-scale political uprising and massacre during South Korea's period under military rule.

Gwangju's subway system is the second newest in South Korea and has only one line (although a second one is planned) and consists of 20 stations.

The Guus Hiddink World Cup Stadium is the current home of Gwangju Sangmu Phoenix of the Korea Professional Soccer League (K-League) and was used in the 2002 FIFA World Cup. It was named after Guus Hiddink, the coach of the South Korean national team during that World Cup tournament.

The KTX (Korea Train eXpress) is the bullet train service for South Korea. It runs two main lines from Seoul/Yongsan: one goes to Busan and the other goes to Mokpo or Gwangju. Its top speed is 350 km/h, but it usually tops off around 300 km/h for safety reasons.
