Founded in 1898 and located on the grounds of the Qing Dynasty's former royal garden, Peking University is China's first national university. It is internationally known as one of China's top universities and known for its traditional Chinese architecture, as well for its historic role in cultural and democracy movements and protests. Its students were the leaders of the democratic movement in the late 1980s that led to the Tiananmen Square Massacre in 1989; ironically, one of its most notable graduates is Mao Zedong, founder of the People's Republic of China and its first official head of state.
