Suwon is the capital of Gyeonggi province, which surrounds Seoul, the current capital of South Korea. It is the country's only completely walled city (with the walls formed by Hwaseong Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site). During the Joseon Dynasty, King Jeongjo attempted to make Suwon the capital of Korea, but was unsuccessful.

The Hwaseong Fortress is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Suwon. It was built in the 1700s during King Jeonjo's reign in the Joseon Dynasty to honor his father. It served as a military defense center to Suwon as a response to a successful invasion by Japan in the past. The fortress walls also make Suwon the only remaining completely walled city in South Korea.
