Fortaleze do Monte is the former military center of Macau, when it was a Portuguese colony. It was built in the 1500s to protect Jesuit interests, and was later seized and controlled by the Portuguese governor of the colony and used to defend Macau. In the 1990s, a museum was built atop and inside the fort. It is part of Macau's UNESCO heritage district.
