Gyeongbokgung Palace is a former royal palace. It was originally built in 1394 during King Taejo's reign and reconstructed in 1867, and was the largest palace built during the Joseon Dynasty. It was mostly burned down by Japanese invaders in the late 1500s. In 1895, the royal family abandoned the palace after Empress Myeongseong was executed by Japanese agents. During the Japanese colonial era, much of the palace was destroyed; in 1989, the South Korean government started to rebuild the portions destroyed during Japanese rule.
